Shed clothes in Autumn

Autumn can be a clean slate, a time to reset and start again. As trees begin to shed their leaves, we can shed what no longer serves us.

It can also be a busy time when activities begin again. This is why it's important to create an organised and calm home, so you can manage when schedules become full.

In these September blogs, we will go through 4 stages of decluttering which are particularly helpful for autumn.

Starting with a wardrobe declutter, as it's a seasonal change. This will also give you the grounding you need to tackle the rest of the house. If your wardrobe is organised and easy to manage, it has an impact on your day.

Getting ready in the morning becomes less stressful., arriving at work on time is doable and your day becomes less frantic.

Follow these steps to create an accessable autumn wardrobe you'll love.

This is a task you can do in 2-6 hrs depending on how many clothes you have.

I recommend putting aside an afternoon and setting a timer for 1 hr a time.

Have a 15 min break after an hour, then reset and do it again.

You will need: bin bags, labels, a pen, storage containers or good quality bags.

  1. Get 3 bin bags ready and label them: Recycle, Give away, Charity shop. The items that are not in a condition to be worn can still be recycled. Go to: https://www.recyclenow.com to find your local recycling banks.

  2. Create a space on the floor or on your bed. Take all of your summer clothes and put them in a pile.

  3. Go through each item and ask yourself

    'Do I enjoy wearing this?"

    Would I buy this today?'

'Is it in good enough condition to keep'.

Pay attention to how you feel when you hold it.

If you smile, feel happy or relaxed, then keep it.

If you feel constricted or apathetic, it's time to let go.

Remember, you're aiming to feel good in everything you wear.

  4. Put the clothes in the relevant bags and any item to keep in a new pile.

Separate them into skirts/ trousers/t-shirts etc...and store similar items together.

I recommend clear containers which are moth proof. You can also vac pac them to save space. Label the boxes for easy access.

  5. Take out your autumn clothes. Go through the same process with each item.

Take the clothes you are keeping and divide them into categories: long sleeved tops, jumpers, work clothes etc...

  6. Now decide how to display them. You can create a rainbow effect, put categories together (shirts, skirts) or clothes for specific events (such as weekend, going out).

Whatever rmakes most sense to you.

  7. Hang lighter items on the rail and more bulky items (such as jumpers) can be folded in a draw. Remember to put more frequently used items in accessable places.

  8. Create a place to hang your next days outfit up.

Now admire your handy work! This re-organisation will help you start the day the right way. Giving you time to drink your coffee and create a morning routine, without the stress.
