Create a cosy space

The third blog in the autumn series is about making a cosy living space.

Usually at this time of year, the blankets come out, the heating goes on and you want to snuggle on the sofa with a good book.

Except you can’t because (insert your answer here) it’s covered in kids toys, paper work, clothes etc.. and that’s even before you look at the floor!

This blog will help you create a space you want to relax in - somewhere you enjoy being- your ideal living room.

Firstly define what you want out of your living space.

Is it a calm and cosy space for relaxing?

A bright and colourful room to do activities, or a multi functional space where the kids can play and you can relax with a coffee.

Once you have defined the kind of space you would like, it will guide you when making decisions about what to keep in there.

At the moment, perhaps it’s a place where you store toys, paperwork, old Knick knacks, random clothing and yoga mats!

Follow these steps to make it a cosy haven:

1: Our living rooms have a habbit of accumulating random items.

Sort them into catagories ie. Clothes, toys, paperwork etc.

Put anything that has a home elsewhere, where it belongs.

2. Go through the remaining items and ask yourself:

Can you do a cull of toys? Perhaps store the majority in the kids bedroom and keep a few in a basket?

Could you declutter your magazines and just keep the one you are reading?

Do you still like those ornaments or is it time to let them go?

3. Once you have decided on the things you want to keep you can buy the appropriate storage if needed.

For example a magazine rack or storage made from natural materials, give a lovely feel. They also keep the room clear and the categories together.

4. Now it’s time to clean and wash any blankets or cushion covers.

5. Lastly make it feel cosy!

Bring candles or more cushions and hang up pictures you love.

Think about the colour tones you like - soft and neutral or bright and colourful.

You can use blankets and cushions, plant pots and lamp shades to accent the room.

Now relax and enjoy your calm, cosy space- perfect for autumn.
